The Newport News Police Department has the responsibility of safely and securely maintaining the City's law enforcement obligations. The number one goal is reducing crime and providing a safe environment for the citizens of Newport News.

2012 JAG Grant Application:

The City of Newport News is eligible to apply for the 2012 Local Solicitation Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program grant. This grant is an annual grant that is awarded by the federal government based on a locality's population and crime statistics. The JAG funds allow localities to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their local needs and conditions.

The FY 2012 federal allocation for the City of Newport News is $136,787. The intended use of these monies by the Police Department is to install a wireless mesh network in the City's existing fiber optic system that will provide live video feeds from the cameras to Police headquarters and to the E911 Communications Center. Camera locations will be based on the analysis of tactical crime information. Officers will review live and/or archived footage from the video feeds as necessary to identify suspects in reported crime.
